Financial literacy

St. John Bosco High School will begin requiring a financial literacy course

Tool for the future added as an additional requirement

BELLFLOWER, CA, USA, Aug 2, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — St. John Bosco High School (SJB) will become one of the first high schools in the nation to require its students to take a financial literacy course as a prerequisite for graduation. Previously offered only as an elective to students enrolled in the school’s Entrepreneurship Pathway program, the course will be available to all students for the first time this fall. This will then become a requirement next year for the new freshman class of 2027.

“We are excited to equip all of our students with the essential knowledge and skills needed for life after high school and provide them with the foundation for financial success,” said Brian Wickstrom, President and CEO of SJB.

SJB has offered financial literacy as an elective for several years through its popular Entrepreneurship Pathway program. Students who choose to enroll in one of SJB’s six academic tracks (Biomedical, Computer Science, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Film and Media Arts, Sports Medicine) participate in advanced-level courses in a specific area of interest over four years. The Entrepreneurship Pathway was created in 2015 in partnership with professors from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and Penn Graduate School of Education. Since its inception, more than 200 SJB students have graduated and attended top business schools and started their own businesses.

The year-long financial literacy course offered through the entrepreneurship pathway has now been transformed into an 8-week course for all students. It will be taught by SJB Global, the school’s online learning initiative that helps provide flexibility for students with heavy course loads and extracurricular commitments. SJB Global online courses are also available for high school students near and far who do not attend SJB. Through SJB Global, financial literacy will be accessible to all high school students around the world.

Courses will include academic and career planning, banking and budgeting, saving and smart spending, credit and debt management, investing, taxes, and more. The course is expected to be approved by UC for the 2022-2023 academic year.
